Baked Alaska

Bake 1 single round, layer cake, any flavor (may make two). Let ½ gallon ice cream (any flavor) get soft and then pack it into a round container just smaller than or equal to cake. Let ice cream freeze in bowl.

Meringue:
4 egg whites
1 tsp. Cream of tartar

Whip until stiff, add (1 tablespoon at a time), ½ c. sugar. Put cake on a cutting board. (Put ice cream between cake layers if making two layers.) Put frozen ice cream on cake.

Cover with meringue, totally down to board, all around cake. Cook on broil in oven for 2-3 minutes to brown meringue. (Put cake on lowest oven rack.) Remove from oven and put in freezer until ready to serve.
